Overview

Located on a small scenic island in the middle of Chilika Lake, the Kalijai Temple is one of Odisha’s most revered and picturesque shrines. Dedicated to Goddess Kalijai, believed to be the protector of fishermen and sailors, this temple is a symbol of faith, beauty, and local legend.

According to folklore, Goddess Kalijai was a newly married girl who drowned in the lake during a storm on her way to her in-laws’ house. Locals began worshipping her as a deity who protects travelers and fishermen from danger.

Today, the temple attracts thousands of devotees, pilgrims, and tourists every year—especially during Makar Sankranti, when a grand fair is organized. Surrounded by calm waters, migratory birds, and hill views, the island is perfect for a peaceful spiritual and scenic getaway.
